Sat 31st July – Sat 7th August OR Sat 7th – Sat 14th August 2027
The Laugavegur Trail (55 km) and the Fimmvörðuháls Trail (25 km) combine to create an 80 km trekking route through some of Iceland’s most varied and distinctive landscapes.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s premier long-distance hikes, the route attracts visitors from across the globe who come to experience Iceland’s unique geology and remote wilderness. Over the course of the trek, hikers pass through colourful rhyolite mountains, black volcanic deserts, lava fields, snowfields, river valleys, and glacial landscapes. The scenery changes constantly, making each day noticeably different from the last.
The route crosses the Icelandic Highlands, an area known for its vast open spaces and limited signs of human development. Long views, broad valleys, and rugged mountains create a genuine sense of travelling through a remote wilderness.
The region has been shaped by the interaction of fire and ice. Active volcanic systems, glaciers, geothermal areas, rivers, and lava fields have combined to create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Europe. Evidence of these geological forces can be seen throughout the trek, from recent lava flows to glacially carved valleys and steaming geothermal features.
While the scenery is the main attraction, the trek also provides a rewarding physical challenge. Covering approximately 80 km over four or five days, the route is achievable for reasonably fit walkers with some hiking experience. Mountain huts and designated campsites along the trail allow visitors to experience the Icelandic Highlands without requiring technical mountaineering skills.
The appeal of the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls Trails lies in the combination of outstanding scenery, geological interest, and a true sense of journey. Few treks offer such a diverse range of landscapes over a relatively short distance, which is why the route is consistently recognised as one of the world’s most memorable trekking experiences.
